The Ateneo de Manila, recognizing the importance and permanent value of some official files, records or documents, has established the Archives to insure the preservation of such materials, which reflect its origin and development, and the activities and achievements of its administrators, faculty, students and alumni. These official records form the bulk of archival resources, which also include the following: official publications of departments and offices, of faculty and students; personal papers of administrators, faculty, students and alumni; and non-textual materials like maps, building plans, photos, tapes, films, medals, trophies and plaques.

The University Archives has been designated since 1958 as the central repository of non-current  records of the administrative offices, academic departments, and student organizations. In this way, it acts as the administrative memory of the institution. The three-fold objective of the archival program is to collect, preserve and make accessible materials of historical value to the qualified researchers.

It therefore has dual role:

firstly, as a service unit, and

secondly, as a research institute--promoting research primarily for the Ateneo

community.
