Three young artists were declared winners of the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards: The Next Wave during a well-attended ceremony at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-la Plaza on Shaw Boulevard on August 13, 2009.
Now on its seventh year the Ateneo Art Awards has positioned itself as one of the most prestigious art prizes in the Philippine contemporary art scene. The three winners, who bested nine other finalists, are:

• Kiri Dalena for her exhibit Keeping the Faith at the Lopez Memorial Museum, • Jan Leeroy New for Terratoma II (War of the Worlds) exhibited at Singapore Biennale 2008, Singapore City Hall, and • Patricia Eustaquio for Death to the Major Viva Minor exhibited at Slab.
Dalena received the Ateneo Art Gallery-Common Room Networks Foundation Residency Grant (Bandung, Indonesia). New received two prizes: the Ateneo Art Gallery-La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Residency Grant (Bendigo, Australia) and the Ateneo Art Gallery-Artesan Gallery Residency Grant (Singapore), which entails an after-residency return one-man show at Artesan Gallery. Residency grants are for a period of three weeks to one month. Eustaquio, who is in the Netherlands completing another artist’s residency, was represented by her mother Christina.
The Ateneo Art Awards is presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery in association with Shangri-La Plaza, Unionbank, Metro Society, and YStyle of the Philippine Star, and is sponsored by Smart Communications and the Lifestyle Network.
Ms. Lala Fojas, AVP and GM of Shangri-la Plaza, read the welcome remarks on behalf of Mr. Andres Bautista, president and CEO of Shangri-la Plaza. Later, the awardees were introduced on stage by the representatives of the valued partners and supporters of the art prize: Mrs. Maria Goolsby for Unionbank, Ms. Karen Flores for the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Mr. Chitz Ramirez for the Lopez Memorial Museum. Ms. Patty Laurel hosted the program.
Mr. Justo Ortiz, chairman and CEO of Unionbank; Ms. Celine Lopez, editor and creative director of Y-Style; and Mr. Raul Manzano, editor-in-chief of Metro Society greeted the awardees and organizers through a pre-taped video.

Ateneo de Manila President Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ, announced and presented the winners. Among the other administrators from the Ateneo who attended the event were Ramon Lerma, director and chief curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery; Yael Buencamino, managing curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery, Dr. Benilda Santos, director of the Fine Arts Program; Dr. Leovino Garcia, former dean of the School of Humanities; Mr. Eddie Go, member of the Ateneo Board of Trustees; and Fr. Rene Javellana, SJ, coordinator of the Art Management and Information Design program.
