At the awarding ceremony, Fr. James Kroeger, paid tribute to the Father Arevalo’s role in building up the theological thinking of the FABC. In his response, Fr. Arevalo remembered being assigned secretary at the first meeting of Asian bishops in Manila 1970 attended by Pope Paul VI and made special mention of the late Cardinal Stephen Kim from Korea as one of those who actively worked to establish the federation.
Father Arevalo is a recipient of the Vatican’s Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (For Church and Pope) award, the highest medal that can be bestowed by the papacy for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy. He is also acknowledged as the “Dean of all Filipino Theologians and Godfather of Hundreds of Priests,” a title conferred upon him by the Church hierarchy. He is also well known as the long-time spiritual adviser of the late former President Corazon C. Aquino.
