Colonial heritage glossary

Bantay, also bantayan, castillo lantawan, tanawan:  A watchtower usually built in coastal areas to warn the populace of approaching marauders.  Made of stone or wood.

Cabecera, also residentia.  In ecclesiastical usage, central religious house that had controlled an area.  In civil usage, synonymous to poblacion or town center.

Church complex: A set of buildings and open spaces built around a church, usually consisting of convento, sometimes stables, primary schools,and fortifications.

Convento: The residence of the parish priest or a missionary, which also serves as the parish center.

De harigue y tabique:  A wooden structure with wooden posts and a walls of tabique.

Harigue, also haligui, haligi: House post, usually unhewn.

Paletada: Lime finish

Poblacion: Town center

Pueblo: Town

Tabique, also tabique pampango: From Arabic thasbik meaning wall consisting of two types (1) made of wood planks or (2) Type of wattle and daub construction consisting of an armature of wood or bamboo, and a mortar finish of sand and lime.  Known as pampango, probably because the method of construction was first used or developed in Pampanga.

Visita: A satellite community dependent on the cabecera.
