Santissimo
Nombre de Jesus Parish
Although
Arévalo traces it roots to the settlement founded in 1581
by governor Ronquillo, the parish church is a new construction.
Beside the church, however, is a 19th century monument
with a metal crown; its stones are said to have come from a church
which the Jesuits built of coral stones.
Extras:
On
the road (J.V. Jocson) leading out of Arévalo to Oton ,
a house marked Mamas Bakeshop, sells hand-woven cloths called
sinamay and hablon. Sinamay is a gossamer cloth
made of jusi fibers, hablon is made of cotton and silk (or rayon)
and comes in a wide spectrum of colors. On the ground floor of
the house is a frame loom, similar to the type which made Iloilo
a thriving place in the 19th century. This house is
one of the few remaining places where hand-woven cloth is still
made, the remnants of a once flourishing textile industry.
