Santa Fe

Erected as parish in accordance with a diocesan decree of 7 April 1881, with civil approval of 29 March, Santa Fe took as its titular, the Santo Niño.  It was separated from Bantayan, to which it had been attached as a visita.  Redondo reports (1886) that the church and convento were made of wood and roofed with nipa.

Heritage site: Near the site of the parish church and beside the Kota Beach Resort, are the ruins of a quadrilateral fort, built of rubble.  Probably erected in 1790, the seaward wall with parts of the side walls still stand, while the landward wall has been demolished.  The main entrance of the fort is through a narrow arched doorway that faces the sea.  Because the fort is located with parish lands, parishioners have trees within the fortification’s perimeter.

Madridejos Fort, Daan Patio

Located near the poblacion is a quadrilateral fort with square bastions at the corners.  The fort may have been built in 1790 or 1792.  The walls are made of rubble but of unequal height because portions have been degraded.  The interior is empty, although some vegetation has grown within the perimeter.  Before the fort’s main gate four posts probably supported a wooden blockhouse that also served as a watchtower.
