Around Iloilo City and Suburbs

Iloilo City can be toured on foot or by vehicle as the city is small and the heritage sites are near each other. You can hire a cab for the whole day, a Tamaraw FX, or can arrange for vans and cars through a hotel. Also check the telephone directory for rent-a-car companies. You can also take public transportation (jeepneys and tricycles) or for some nostalgia, the calesa, a horse drawn carriage and once the most common means of public transportation. Capiz | Aklan | Iloilo | ANTIQUE | Guimaras | Negros Occidental

Tour: Antique

Antique Province forms Panay Island's western coast.  Because of the westward placement of Panay's north-south cordillera, Antique is a long but narrow stretch of flat land hemmed in by a mountain range.  Thus, fourteen of its towns are coastal and only three inland.  One is on an island.  Mounts Madia-as (2,117m), Mangtud (1,900 m) and Baloy (2,080 m) are the principal peaks of this mountainous province.  Its most extensive flood plain is near the capital San Jose de Buenavista.  Antique was constituted a politico-military unit in 1790, and a province in 1798 (or 96).  The capital was transferred from Hamtic to San Jose be Buenavista (Tubigon) in 1802.  It was established as a province under the American civil governments through Act No. 2711 on 10 March 10, 1917.

Antique is connected to the principal cities of Panay Island through a coastal road system.  Travel time from Iloilo City to San Jose takes about two hours.  The narrow plain and mountains of Antique prevent it from having its own airport, so airline travelers have to land at Iloilo, then travel by land either through public buses, FX vans, or private vehicles.  Some travelers pass through Antique on the way to Boracay Island whose jump off point at Malay, Kalibo is near the provincial boundary.
