JG-SOM welcomes its new batch of SOM-mates!
Michael Mendoza, IV BS-LM, June 28, 2007

"HELLO PHILIPPINES AND HELLO WORLD!"—Lovely host Kamae de Jesus (III-BS CTM), together with Chelo Bacarro (II-BS CTM) and Erica Sangoyo (IV-BS CTM), greets hundreds of freshman students during the JG-SOM Freshman Orientation Night last June 8, 2007 held at the Henry Lee Irwin Theater.

Lovely hosts Erica Sangoyo (IV-BS CTM), Kamae de Jesus (III-BS CTM) and Chelo Bacarro (II-BS CTM) welcome the freshmen to the 5th JG-SOM Freshman Orientation Night!

This year's theme was Atenista Big Brother SeaSOM 5, as it is the fifth year in the school's tradition of welcoming its new set of freshman students unlike any other school within Ateneo.

After the Ateneo Glee Club's performance of the National Anthem, the show started off with Dean Rudy Ang's talk, with his very impressive entrance in cool shades and leather jacket, in line with the Terminator theme of his presentation. Throughout his speech, the freshmen proudly roared and rooted for the achievement of their respective courses and the School of Management in general. Aside from highlighting the many successful graduates of JG-SOM, Dean Ang also showcased the many programs and activities the students can expect during their stay in the school.

Mr. Rudy Ang, Dean of the John Gokongwei School of Management, is grilled on the hot seat by host Chelo Bacarro (II-BS CTM) during a one-on-one interview segment.

Just like the famous reality TV series, the program welcomed six new "SOM-mates" from different high schools and backgrounds, each representing a course from JG-SOM. As all six new SOM-mates enter the Big Brother House, as shown on a "live feed" on screen, the old SOM-mates already inside the house greet them with a warm welcome.

The show featured on-screen segments of the SOM-mates interacting inside the house, with its fair share of romance and drama during a love triangle among SOM-mates, and success stories from accomplishing their weekly tasks to managing their weekly budget. After each video clip, JG-SOM's four department chairpersons, as "resident experts," comment on how well the SOM-mates are doing inside the house.

What got the attention and hype of the freshman students were the more gripping and interesting segments of the night, including: sending off SOM-mate Jai Reyes (III-BS CTM) as Big Brother grants his wish to spend his Junior Term Abroad in France; how the die-hard LaSallista SOM-mate Brian Paz (IV-BS MGT) becomes a true blue Atenean; and of course saying farewell to SOM-mate Chris Tiu (BS ME '07) as he ends his stay in the SOM Big Brother House.

Another portion that kept the audience on its toes was the live nomination segment, where the SOM-mates were taught of the consequences of common freshman "violations," such as not wearing their IDs, not following the dress code and... not studying well enough, something that eventually got SOM-mate Alex See (IV-BS MAC) evicted from the house.

The program was also kept fun and alive by the band Underscore_, performing Mahiwagang Gabi live on stage, a song which band guitarist Jim Bacarro (III-BS CTM) personally and specifically wrote for this year's JG-SOM Freshman Orientation Night.

The beautiful Ms. Rissa Samson (BS MGT '01), President of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines, gives an inspiring speech to the freshmen JG-SOM students.

Previous "Big Winners" who have graduated from the JG-SOM also graced the show by paying a visit. The beautiful and captivating Ms. Rissa Samson (BS MGT '01), President of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines, gave an inspiring speech on how she was able to utilize her management degree even in the field of fashion and modeling. On the other hand, pretty and popular singer-actress Karylle Tatlonghari (BS CTM '02) gave interesting insights and helpful what-and-what-nots to the freshmen during her one-on-one interview with the host. Lastly, with the recent release of his debut record, Miguel Escueta (BS CTM '06) closed the show by performing Falling Away, the first single off his album.

Recording artist Miguel Escueta (BS CTM '06) closes the night with a lively performance of his debut single, "Falling Away."

The Big Brother theme of the night only exemplified that the freshmen's stay in JG-SOM will be a microcosm of the real world: the hardships and challenges they must face as well as the memorable moments and victories they will share in and treasure in their years as School of Management students will all be worth it.

Ending the night on a high note, the three hosts once again welcomed all the freshman JG-SOM students with: "Huwag na huwag kayong bibitiw. Kayo pa rin ay nakatutok sa pinakamalaki at nag-iisang teleserye ng buhay-estudyante—ito ang Atenista Big Brother SeaSOM 5!"

Welcome to the John Gokongwei School of Management!
